Thanks Esperanza! I'm definitely going to steal it.

Per our follow up Planning committee conf call--suggested questions for determining needs in our region.

Questionnaire -- NE CC Network members:
(Sent to NE Region members)

1) Please list your SG program’s climate change training needs. Be specific with any links to opportunities or programs.

2) Do you have resources on climate change adaptation to share? Please list links or PDFs. If on NING site or on an adaptation website already, give the link.

3) Please list your ideas for regional needs for program development. Programs/projects that we could conduct throughout the region.

4) How do we combine our climate change work with the focus groups’ work?

5) How do we infuse climate change into our work, for those who have not been able to do this? Specific examples?

6) Who do you know in our region that is missing from this list of network members?

Folks--FYI, I will not be available for the call today until 2:30 due to another mtg. Talk to you then.

Thank you for the insightful comments and what I will plan to do is tweak the evaluation form specifically address the different sessions. The reason for the logistics is since this is the first one, it might be a good idea to get baseline feedback on the framework of the workshop (length, content, pace). I agree though on the follow up questions you recommended and of it is ok with Jim, we can incorporate the "what happens next" and "what did you gain", etc. types of questions on his needs assessment. I'm trying to keep the evaluation at one page (front and back) since this will be hard copy -- shouldn't be too difficult to do, though. Thanks again.

That sounds great, Jim. We just held a regional mtg in Boston (at MIT SG) at which a half day was devoted to talking about CC; and we also talked about a regional training in May that would include CC. Your info from this survey would also assist in informing our process and all of this will be helpful as we meet on Wed afternoon to discuss national and regional perspectives for CC.

We're also working on a separate needs assessment survey for future climate training needs that we'll have ready for the packet. The CPO-SARP project that we started last month is to develop a two-hour online coastal climate training course for Sea Grant, plus develop an accompanying climate resource base through development of a wiki. In a sense, we would be asking the SGCN what they would prioritize as the “next steps” and what issues are priorities for training and info needs. We could add a few questions like those that you ask below that apply directly to the workshop. Our plan is to hand this out to the group in Charleston as a paper survey that they can fill out during the workshop, but we’re also making an online version for those 30+ Sea Granter participating from online (we have about 65 registered for WebEx of the plenaries) and those that don’t want to fill out the paper. I wouldn’t want to depend solely on an online version, though. We want people to fill out the EV’s survey (and ours) as the workshop progresses. Sort of like assignments while there…..

oops-I meant of course a Survey Monkey in the last comment..

Regarding the evaluation draft: I was wondering if it might be helpful to have the sessions broken out to evaluate. I think that might be a good way to pinpoint the assessment of the actual content per session. Just a suggestion. It seems a little too focused on the logistics part and might have a little more on the actual info gained. Perhaps a question about: What did you learn that you can apply in your work/program? What one thing will you share with colleagues regarding climate change adaptation as a result of this workshop, either a method or program or idea?
Will this be a paper survey? How about a Monkey Survey?

Hi--Sorry to have missed the last call. We have had a hotbed of climate change-- conference, and 2 workshops over the past week. I would like to add our new website, just launched to the list, as well as a PDF of the most recent version of all the Sea Grant climate change activity that Paul Anderson is preparing (should have that in the next day or two).
Our Maine Climate News website is: http://www.extension.umaine.edu/maineclimatenews/

I also have quite a few resources on comunicating climate change that I will find.

The mammoth's lament: How cosmic impact sparked devastating climate change

Researchers have found evidence of a major cosmic event near the end of the Ice Age. The ensuing climate change forced many species to adapt or die.

Amazon River exhales virtually all carbon taken up by rainforest

Woody plant matter is almost completely digested by bacteria living in the Amazon River. This tough stuff plays a major part in fueling the river's breath. The finding has implications for global carbon models, and for the ecology of the Amazon and the world's other rivers. Until recently, people believed much of the rainforest's carbon floated down the Amazon River and ended up deep in the ocean.

Earth's iron core is surprisingly weak

Researchers have used a diamond anvil cell to squeeze iron at pressures as high as 3 million times that felt at sea level to recreate conditions at the center of Earth. The findings could refine theories of how the planet and its core evolved.
