Applications Now Available for Climate Solutions University 2013

Assess and Respond to Climate Related Risks

The increasingly devastating floods, hurricanes, drought, wildfires, and tornadoes have caused the U.S. to suffer more weather-related disasters than ever before.  Climate Solutions University (CSU) programs offer communities the opportunity to assess and respond to climate-related risks that may be threatening their water resources, budgets and resident well-being.  We now invite communities to consider applying to the 2013 session of CSUwhere a network of communities are learning to increase resilience through the development of forest, water, economic, and climate vulnerability assessments.

The CSU curriculum breaks a complicated and often overwhelming process into manageable components.  Our unique training and coaching model helps rural leaders develop:

  • Technical skills to conduct complex research and design adaptation plans,
  • Communication skills to convey the importance of climate adaptation,
  • Political skills to unite disparate perspectives and motivate the public to support leaders to implement on-the-ground change.

We offer two levels of participation to suit your needs:
Climate Adaptation Plan Development Program
CSU's curriculum will coach your stakeholder team through assessments of local risks and opportunities related to climate, forest, water, and economic conditions. You'll then synthesize your findings into a climate adaptation plan. Find example plans here.

Climate Adaptation Plan Implementation Program
Receive group and individual support for converting existing plans into action.  Thus far, 19 communities have generated outcomes ranging from reduced disaster risk, greater forest protection, and protective public policy.

Could your organization benefit from:

  • Being a member of a strong network of equipped with the skills to address climate change in their communities?
  • Learning from a new model training that supports the sharing of strategies and expertise?
  • Expanding your leadership skills?
  • Transforming planning by adding climate, forest, and watershed-based strategies?
  • Increasing fundraising capacity?
  • Developing new policies that ensure economic stability, community health, and forest and water resources?
  • Saving costly consultant fees?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then consider applying to the 2013 session of CSU.

Some communities may be eligible to receive a scholarship of $10,000 in addition to consulting services valued at ~$50,000.  MFPP will be interviewing as applications are received, so early submission is recommended.  Please contact Jeff Morris, jeff@mfpp.org, (530) 355-9880 with questions.

Phase I Partnership Proposals
March 15, 2011

Synopsis of Program:
The Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) program seeks to establish a coordinated national network of regionally- or thematically-based partnerships devoted to increasing the adoption of effective, high quality educational programs and resources related to the science of climate change and its impacts. Each CCEP is required to be of a large enough scale that they will have catalytic or transformative impact that cannot be achieved through other core NSF program awards. The CCEP program is one facet of a larger NSF collection of awards related to Climate Change Education (CCE) that has two goals: (1) preparing a new generation of climate scientists, engineers, and technicians equipped to provide innovative and creative approaches to understanding global climate change and to mitigate its impact; and, (2) preparing today's U.S. citizens to understand global climate change and its implications in ways that can lead to informed, evidence-based responses and solutions. Each CCEP must include representation from at least each of the following communities: climate scientists, experts in the learning sciences, and practitioners from within formal or informal education venues. This combined expertise will insure that educational programs and resources developed through the activities of each CCEP reflects current understanding about climate science, the best theoretical approaches for teaching such a complex topic, and the practical means necessary to reach the intended learner audience(s). Each CCEP should be organized around either geographic regions that share similar climate change impacts, or major climate impact themes (e.g., sea-level rise).

The CCEP program is a two-phase program. This solicitation seeks proposals for development of Phase I Partnerships (CCEP-I). CCEP-I grantees will receive up to 2 years of funding to support synthesis, network-building, and strategic planning activities leading toward potential Phase II Partnerships (CCEP-II). Each CCEP-I awardee is expected to: (1) conduct an inventory of existing climate change education resources and identify educational needs and opportunities relevant to their particular region or theme; (2) identify key players from relevant stakeholder communities and initiate network development; (3) convene community workshops and other community-building activities that lead toward development of a comprehensive climate change education strategic plan for that Partnership; and, (4) begin to serve as a test-bed for development, customization and scaling up of standards-based instructional materials, professional development and training models, and other appropriate activities tailored to the Partnership's goals. External evaluation activities (formative and summative) are required during Phase I efforts (and will be required during Phase II). In FY 2011, CCEP-I awardees will be able to request supplemental funding in order to support: (1) early implementation of meritorious programs or activities identified during the planning effort; and/or (2) expansion of the initial Partnership through addition of other investigators seeking to collaborate with a specific CCEP-I awardee. A future program solicitation will invite proposals for Phase II Partnerships, which are expected to receive 5 years of support for full-scale implementation of mature strategic plans serving the goals of the CCE program. Hi All,
Mike asked me to post the following note from Stephanie Showalter, the Directer of the National Sea Grant Law Center:

Dear Extension Leaders,

Last fall, the Law Center launched its first mini-grant competition. I have been very pleased with the results. We have been able to help Oregon Sea Grant fund workshops for fishermen dealing with planning processes for offshore energy and marine reserves. Illinois-Indiana received funding to develop a database of state invasive species laws. MIT Sea Grant received funds to provide an online component to a symposium it co-funded with a Boston law school. Alaska Sea Grant leveraged a small amount of funding from us to put on several days worth of events commemorating the Exxon Valdez anniversary.

I am writing to let you know that funding is still available through this program, although time is running out. My grant ends January 31, 2010, so we need to finalize our list of projects as soon as possible. A total of about $20,000 is available, which roughly works out to four projects, as most have been seeking around $5,000.

If you have a legal project that you haven't been able to undertake because of budget constraints, please give me a call. Typically, we have been funding research projects involving law students or legal research and workshops that bring people together to deal with a discrete legal problem. We don't award funding for general conferences and/or meetings.

The actual application process is very simple and straightforward. Simply send me a letter outlining your project and the proposed budget. Proposals are reviewed by my staff and the Law Center's Advisory Committee. Upon acceptance, final details are worked out with respect to subcontracts and or reimbursements. Not all mini- grants require subcontracts.

I look forward to hearing from you! I know there are a lot of good projects out there.

Thanks,
Stephanie Showalter
