Thomas Ruppert replied to Jessica Whitehead's discussion 2011 SGCN Activities in the group Steering Committee
"My comments on the page for "Formalizing SGCN Strategies" are probably more apropos here: 1) The SGCN serves to bring together examples of successful projects that result in real changes at the local government level. The need for examples…"

Thomas Ruppert replied to Jessica Whitehead's discussion Formalizing SGCN Strategic Objectives in the group Steering Committee
"Well, I'll do an equally stream-of-consciousness reply. . . . It is true that the charter already lays things out quite well. I confess to also not usually using the NING site. Part of this probably stems from the fact that I feel my focus is,…"

Gulf of Mexico Community of Practice Workshop at Sirata Beach Resort

April 19, 2010 at 1pm to April 21, 2010 at 3pm
The Gulf of Mexico Climate Outreach Program is assembling a Community of Practice to bring extension, outreach, and education (EOE) experts together to identify how to help coastal communities address the potential economic, social, and ecological impacts of Sea Level Rise (SLR) around the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The project will discuss the impacts of SLR through a collaborative project involving the four GOM Sea Grant Programs (Texas, Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi-Alabama), NOAA…See More

Thomas Ruppert commented on Steve McMurray's blog post FAO report on climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture
"I am surprised that under habitat changes the report did not discuss the loss of estuaries in the land/sea interface due to armoring to hold back the sea. Does anyone have any research on the impacts to fisheries of the loss of nursery habitat?"

New study indicates significant likely impact of further development and coastal protection on wetlands

Here is a summary of a new paper recently published by James Titus and coauthors on the impact continuing and increased coastal development and protection will have wetland migration in the face of sea level rise. Makes for interesting reading as they argue that the federal government is violating the Clean Water Act by allowing extensive armoring to take place.

Volcanoes cause climate gas concentrations to vary

Trace gases and aerosols are major factors influencing the climate. With the help of highly complex installations, such as MIPAS on board of the ENVISAT satellite, researchers try to better understand the processes in the upper atmosphere. Now, scientists have completed a comprehensive overview of sulfur dioxide measurements.

Climate change and wildfire

Concerns continue to grow about the effects of climate change on fire. Wildfires are expected to increase 50 percent across the United States under a changing climate, over 100 percent in areas of the West by 2050 as projected by some studies. Of equal concern to scientists and policymakers alike are the atmospheric effects of wildfire emissions on climate.

Origins of human culture linked to rapid climate change

Rapid climate change during the Middle Stone Age, between 80,000 and 40,000 years ago, sparked surges in cultural innovation in early modern human populations, according to new research.
